The holidays are over and the weather has kicked in to actually match the season. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is upon us. More commonly known as the winter blues, which typically effects more than 10 million people, more women than men. I’ve listed a few cost free ways to help when needed. Self-love doesn’t always require spending money, often times you are your best resource.

Relax With a Hot Bath:

Hot water acts as a natural decongestant to aid with sinus problems and colds, decreases anxiety and helps the body detoxify through sweating. One study found that warm water can actually help reduce pain and encourage feelings associated with well being. Add your favorite music coupled with a glass of wine or your beverage of choice. A peace of mind is golden and if time is not a factor, fill the tub and relax with a nice hot bath.

Get your Pen and Journal:

Studies have shown that writing helps to enhance mental health. Find a personalized and private space free from distractions. Start writing, no particular for or fashion. Journaling can improve your overall mood by addressing problems, fears and concerns. It also provides an opportunity for self talk and identifying negative thoughts and behaviors. Encourage yourself to write daily. A few minutes out of the day is better than none.

The Power Of Words:

Write out a list of affirmations . Make them visible in a place you frequent often. Remind yourself that there is value in reflecting when you’re in low places, but remind yourself that you can’t stay in that space. Remind yourself of happy things, focus on gratitude. There is power in words. Write them down and repeat often.

Take a Nap:

Studies have shown a quick nap can help rejuvenate your thought process. A quick reset can often increase alertness, stamina and reduce stress. Studies prove that a quick 15 – 20 minute power nap can recharge the brain’s batteries.

Meditation:

Tune out the distraction of the world with meditation. If traditional meditation doesn’t work for you, try audio and visual meditation. The most important thing is being consistent. Once a day, pick a time when you will not be disturbed and you are feeling alert and well rested.
